FAQ: What are Wikki Stix made of?

  • Wikki Stix are NON-TOXIC, made of food-grade wax, like you’d find in bubble gum and lipstick… along with hand-knitting yarn, like you’d use to knit an afghan. Wholly made in the USA.
  • They do not contain gluten, latex, dairy, nor any nuts or nut by-products.
  • The wax provides that “stickability” factor, so they stick to paper and other smooth surfaces with just fingertip pressure. No glue, no paste.

    Very useful when flying!!
    This was one of the activities I decided to take with us when taking a 5-hour flight. It is very difficult to keep kids entertained for long periods of times. But these wikki sticks were super fun for them. Of course I did not show them prior our trip, I found when I show them new items, their attention will last longer. Now, I only let them play with these sticks when flying.It comes with some ideas for them to start building but I love seeing who they start developing and creating their own designs.

    I bought this item as a distraction for visiting grandchildren, ages 2 and 4. The package has 2 waxed paper strips, 12 each, stuck down by color. After stripping off the waxed pieces they lost interest. The 4 yo was able to twist 2 colors together, but the 2 yo wasn’t interested at all. I bought the cheapest version I could find,, and now I’m certain they are too expensive for what they are, from the small counts to the large, all brands. They did not sustain the interest of my grandchildren.

    I did assess them myself to see if they stick as stated. They stuck to others and to hard surfaces, but they are not substantial enough to form shapes, even for kids a bit older.. One more observation: If dropped on the floor, especially carpet, these slightly sticky pieces will collect household dust, and eventually stop sticking altogether.

    I would not expect most 2–5-year-olds to make creative projects from these without guidance. However, if you show them something you assemble, most children will attempt to copy it, rather than create their own. No creativity in that. Still, there might be some fine motor skills benefit.

    I suggest you stick with molding clays at this age. A better sensory experience, IMO, and even a 2-year-old can manipulate clay.

    Update 11-14-2021 I returned these. After my original review, I realized it would be significantly cheaper to use chenille stems (AKA pipe cleaners) because the sticky feature does not add much to bendy stems, IMO. Besides, pipe cleaners are very useful for cleaning in tiny spaces, like between baseboard radiator fins, and fishing out black gunk from your sink drains. (I do like versatile products.) Look for something like the link. You could even brush them with non-toxic white school glue if you really wanted to add stickiness. Or solidify finished projects by brushing it on.
